I recently stumbled upon an iPhone fitness app that is so great, I feel it would be an injustice not to share it with everyone. This app has taken a simple concept in regards to staying fit and packaged it to be practical and applicable, user-friendly, intuitive, and most significantly, measurable.
myfitnesspal. Quite simply, it is a calorie counter. It allows you to set a fitness goal (e.g., lose 10 lbs. in 2 months) then it lays out how many calories a day you can consume with respect to how much you work out and how active you are at your job. It has an incredible database of foods and nutritional information, including food brands found at grocery stores, specific restaurants, and home-prepared food.
Each time you work out, you record your activity and it adds the amount of calories you burned to your daily allowable calorie intake. Each day, you have the option to record your weight and track your progress.
This app has completely transformed the way I think about food choices. I am much more cognizant of what I put into my body these days, and I've started to think about working out in terms of what else I can allow myself to indulge in that day. I'm starting to make overall smarter decisions with food. Through using the app at Einstein's Bagels last week, I discovered that the bagel I usually got- Asiago- has almost three times the calories of the Honey Whole Wheat. I enjoy both of them the same. Obviously, I will order the Honey Whole Wheat from now on.
I've been counting my calories with myfitnesspal for a little over a week and I've already lost about three pounds with no change to my workout routine. It's amazing how much just eating the right shit and the right amount of it can impact your body.
